Whether you’re going out for drinks in your favourite pair jeans, or you’re heading off to a fancy party in a clingy cocktail dress, you want to look firm, sleek and smooth. For many of us, looking svelte sometimes takes a bit more control than passing up dessert at the dinner table and that’s where body shapers come into play. When most people hear the term shapewear, they immediately think of grandma’s girdle. If you’re one of these people and you’re thinking: No way, I wouldn’t be caught dead in those things – well you might just be missing out on the best thing since the invention of wrinkle-free fabric!

NOTE: To anyone who has ever worn shape wear. Before reading any further, I am challenging you to forget everything you know about shapewear, because the shapewear game has changed.

Today, there are a wide variety of body-shapers. From flattening your tummy and abolishing the dreaded muffin-top, to lifting and smoothing out your bottom, there’s a body shaper for every purpose imaginable. Thanks to advances in modern technology and production, today’s shapewear is less constrictive and even more comfortable than ever; that’s because unlike earlier shapewear (which used to be all about compression), today’s shapewear actually sculpts your body to look slimmer without the fat displacement or other side effects (such as the dreaded uni-boob or pancake-bottom) typical of earlier shapewear. Production advancements have also allowed manufacturers to create thinner and lighter fabrics than earlier shapewear, which have give shape wear a more desirable feel against the body.

Naturally, when I first learned that Hanes recently developed a line of bodyshapers, I was intrigued. As a curvy woman, and a die-hard fashion enthusiast, I am no stranger to shapewear. Interestingly, despite having resigned myself a long time ago to the notion that beauty and pain go hand in hand (ahem, think waxing and tweezing) I was hopeful that Hanes might be the one company that I could trust to create comfortable shapewear. So I began my research of these new products, and I was delighted to find a great selection of affordable women’s bodyshapers, for average to full-figured women with countless shapes and silhouettes to address seemingly every body’s needs. Even better, the silhouettes were so beautiful! No need to worry about an embarrassing Bridget Jones ‘granny-panties-moment’ because Hanes’ designers have taken some serious style notes from lingerie fashion. In fact, models such as the Firm Control Shaping Seamless Cami to the left have such a beautiful feminine appeal, I’d be confident enough to wear this camisole on its own!

So I thought to myself: So far, so good –

Great selection: Check.
Affordable prices: Check.
Beautiful styles: Check!

But what about comfort? Well guess what… after some personal product testing I can answer this question with complete confidence! Hanes’ shape wear is so incredibly comfortable, and I looked so great in both the Firm Control Hi-Waisted Brief and the All-In-One Torset, I didn’t want to take either of them off! I’m completely sold. Now it’s your turn! Be sure to check out the new Hanes’ shape wear collection which just hit Walmart stores across Canada as of April 23rd.

Pick up a Hanes’ body shaper today and leave us some feedback! We’re waiting to hear from you.

Bankrupt Brides & Smock Weddings

During the 18th century, it was believed to be good luck for brides to be married not wearing underwear beneath their wedding dress. In fact, this superstition continued well into the nineteenth century when ‘smock weddings’ began to emerge. According to lore, when a widowed woman remarried, her new husband became liable for any debts incurred by his bride-to-be and her previous husband. However, if the bride went to the altar barefoot, wearing no more than a smock and nothing else, creditors would take pity on such a poor woman and the new couple would be spared from repaying the old husband’s debt.

Lucky Drawers: Myth or Magic?

A common superstition among many athletes, both professional and amateur, is the idea that a pair lucky underwear will improve their performance. Tennis superstar Serena Williams has her lucky socks; baseball player Jason Giambi has his lucky gold thong; and even Hanes’ own spokesperson, basketball legend Michael Jordan wore the shorts from his University of North Carolina days under his Chicago Bulls kit. With so many athletes swearing by their lucky underwear, it was only a matter of time before a group of scientists put this superstition to the test. What was the answer? In a study conducted last year in Cologne, Germany researchers actually found that lucky underwear can improve an athletes’ performance. The researchers wrote: “activating a good-luck superstition leads to improved performance by boosting people’s belief in their ability to master a task.”1 Of course, raw talent, hard training and a good detergent for your lucky drawers are necessary factors in the equation as well!

The Origin of Underwear Idioms…

Ever wonder where the expression ‘going commando’ comes from? Well wonder no longer! Although the origin of this idiom is not certain, the term is thought to be related to an earlier term: ‘going regimental.’ This expression is in reference to the True Scotsman who wore their military style kilts without underwear. Alternatively, the term going commando has also been associated with the soldiers of the Vietnam War. According to David Engber of Slate Magazine, the addition of this term to the modern lexicon can be traced back to college campuses during the mid-70s in reference to soldiers who were reputed to go without underwear to reduce moisture and increase ventilation while fighting during the Vietnam War. Sounds like these boys could have benefited from a pair of Hanes ComfortSoft Briefs for men. UltraSoft Cotton designed to eliminate pinching and binding, made with 100% breathable cotton and totally Tagless, there’s no reason to go commando ever again!

While getting dressed up in scary costumes and going trick-or-treating is usually reserved for youngsters, I think there’s no reason that adults can’t share in the fun of spooky stories and gratuitous treats! In light of this, for the month of October, I am asking readers to write in with their most horrifying underwear stories for a chance to win a free product from Hanes.

Wicked wedgies gripping onto you for dear life? Decrepit undies so old they look like they belong to a mummy? Possessed bras that refuse to stay in place? We want to hear your story! Rest-assured that your anonymity will be preserved and the possibility of getting some free underwear is sure to ease your pain!

So forget about going door-to-door this Halloween; instead, let’s get going drawer-to-drawer…in search of the scariest skivvy stories around. On that note, here is this week’s featured story:

“I remember very well a time [when] I bought a sports bra at La Senza. When I entered the store, a middle-aged lady approached me and offered to help me find the right bra. The woman spoke with confidence, as if she knew her products, and convinced me to purchase a certain model. She assured me that both the fit and support were perfect, and that the bra would hold up to my workout routines. After spending more than 45 minutes in the store, I bought the athletic bra she recommended in both black and white. [A few] days went by, and it was time for my weekly Yoga class at the Centre Claude. I was quite excited to test out my new sports bra. After adjust[ing] the sports bra as shown, I put on a loose tank-top and left the locker-room to join my group, which by the way was a mix of women and men.

At first, everything seemed fine; my bra was sitting in place and I felt comfortable as I did the breathing exercises. Next came the stretching. Half way through this set of exercises, the instructor asked us to do a strange position [which required] stretching our arms up high and leaning back to hold for a couple of seconds. As I held my position I could [feel] the sports bra lifting towards my chin. Determined as I was to finish the exercise, I refused to stop to re-arrange my bra. Bad decision…the sports bra ended up lifting so bar back that my boobs popped right out, and with an unappealing ‘gravity-pulling-down-on-them’ form too! “OKAY! This is so embarrassing!” Everyone around me had a clear view since my tank-top was very loose. Mortified, I broke from the position to ‘place myself’ but by that time all eyes were on me. Grrrrrr! Needless to say, I never went back to that class and I never bought a sports bra at La Senza again!

Either cooked or carved, the pumpkin’s fate as of Thanksgiving is bleak. This Halloween, Hanes thinks that pumpkins deserve a break from the hollowed-out existence they lead. If you agree, then why not save a pumpkin and decorate a t-shirt instead this year for Halloween? It’s a fun and easy project that the whole family can enjoy.

What you’ll need:

T-shirt: The first thing you will need is a 100% cotton, solid-coloured t-shirt. We recommend checking using our ComfortSoft Crew-Neck T-shirts. They’re Tagless for extra comfort, and they also come in black – perfect for Halloween.

Waxed paper

Paper towels

White chalk

Bleach pen

Safety precautions:

In this project, we’ll use the whitening power of bleach to create a “negative-image” design on a solid coloured t-shirt. Remember to wear old clothes and rubber gloves while working with the bleach, and be sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Bleach should never be used without adult supervision.

Instructions:

(1) Wash and Dry the t-shirt, then lay the T-shirt on a flat surface. Place a piece of waxed-paper inside the t-shirt; this will prevent the bleach from bleeding through.

(2) Use chalk or a washable fabric pen to sketch your design onto the t-shirt. Keep in mind that the bleach will spread slightly, so it’s best to draw a simple design using lines and dots.

(3) Gently shake the bleach pen, then test it out on a paper towel to ensure that the bleach is flowing well. After you’ve tested the pen out, trace over your chalk-lined design with the bleach pen.

(4) Once you’re done tracing, allow the bleach to settle completely into the t-shirt, until the fabric has changed colour. Depending on the material and colour of your t-shirt this could take from 10 minutes up to 2 hours.

(5) Once you’re sure that the bleach has completely “set”, remove the waxed paper from inside the shirt and wash it alone in the washing machine. After a dry cycle, your t-shirt is good to go!

Now it’s YOUR turn:

Send in a picture of your decorated t-shirt for a chance to win a free Hanes Tagless cotton t-shirt!!!

Every year fashion enthusiasts around the globe dedicate seven days to the devotion of couture; this semi-annual event is known as Fashion Week. During these style-filled days, jet-set fashion enthusiasts, as well as those working in the industry, flock to the fashion Meccas of the world where they pay homage to the designers of leading fashion houses and their latest collections. While the most prominent fashion weeks are hosted in London, Milan, New York and Paris, other well-known fashion weeks are hosted in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Toronto, and my hometown, Montreal.

Two weeks ago, Montreal hosted its own Fashion Week, also known as Semaine Mode to French-speaking Montrealers. The 21st edition of Montreal Fashion Week took place in the trendy Old Port district and definitely lived up to its reputation as the year’s biggest fashion event in Montreal. In collaboration with ELLE Quebec, MFW hosted five fashion shows celebrating local designers where attendees got sneak-previews of the upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 trends from Montreal designers such as Andrew Floyd, Denis Gagnon, Simon Chang, Soia & Kyo and Veinage.

My MWF Swag Bag!

Of course no red-carpet event would be complete without a gift bag, and this year’s swag bag did not disappoint. With hair care products from Pantene, Fall/Winter 2011 look-books from Geox and Le Chateau, make-up from Cover Girl and a cute compact mirror, Rio breath mints, and Crest 3D White mouthwash, all packed in a reusable enviro-bag from Debco solutions, I totally hit the jack-pot! However, the best gift of all was the Hanes Tagless red cotton t-shirt which came neatly packaged with a little Hanes bow! Although it may not have been haute couture, I declare its simplicity and unrivalled comfort to be just as beautiful. So, thanks Hanes, for my incredibly comfortable Tagless tee, and for supporting the talent and creativity of our local fashion designers.

One example of Hanes’ greenie-gumption & ingenuity was its decision to change the folding method of its 5-pack undershirts which allowed Hanes to reduce the size of the bag by a half-inch. The result: a smaller bag meant savings in both environmental costs and product costs which was good news for everyone!

Interestingly, in assessing the environmental impacts of a cotton t-shirt’s lifecycle, Hanes found that the largest environmental burden actually came from consumer use, and not from the energy and other resources used in any of the manufacturing and transportation of t-shirts. Surprised? I certainly was!

Hanes reuses fabric scraps to produce its unique EcoSmart cotton yarn which can be found in certain specially-marked Hanes EcoSmart apparel including socks, sweats and t-shirts. This initiative has allowed Hanes to produce EcoSmart cotton socks which are made with 55% recycled fibre and to produce 67% of the fabric for their undershirts using renewable energy.

One of the most fulfilling ways to get rid of old clothing is to donate your used apparel to a charity, such as the Salvation Army or the Old Brewery Mission. Another equally fulfilling, although perhaps slightly less altruistic, way to get rid of old clothes is to attend or host a swap with friends.

RECYCLING:

Hanes also uses recycled and responsibility sourced material in some of its packaging, and is continually seeking to improve the recyclability of its packaging materials and to cut down the amount of waste that goes into landfills.
